Tips On Starting Tilapia Farming in Ghana

Tilapia is an inexpensive, commonly consumed fish that is farmed all over the world. It is a lean source of protein that is also high in several vitamins and minerals, such as selenium, vitamin B12, niacin, and potassium. 

It is an ideal fish for farming because it doesn’t mind being crowded, grows quickly, and consumes a cheap vegetarian diet. It is one of the tastiest fish delicacies and is consumed by people all over the world. There are different recipes when it comes to preparing tilapia and it can be eaten as a whole meal or accompanied by other dishes. It can be consumed as fingerlings or full-size fish. 

Here in Ghana people of all tribes enjoy a tilapia meal. It is commonly grilled or fried and sold with banku or kenkey or used for soup. It is mostly farmed on a large scale in the Volta region but nowadays there are lots of people practicing farming everywhere. If you are looking at doing tilapia farming for commercial purposes or just for personal use then here are tips on starting tilapia farming in Ghana.

1. Have a budget and a business goal

To start out any business, it is ideal to set out business goals and have a budget you would work with. You should know whether you want to do tilapia farming on a large scale or a small scale. You may decide to start on a small scale to test the waters. 

Draw a plan and decide how much you would like to spend on farming and if you have the available resources. The budget on the place you will farm, the fingerlings to start, equipment, food for tilapia, employees, and many more.

2. Land or space for farm

The first and most important thing to consider when starting a tilapia farm is the land or space you will use for farming. If you’re looking at large-scale tilapia farming in Ghana, then you need a full plot of land or two for a really large scale. Choose a location that is accessible and people can easily come there to buy your fish either wholesale or retail. If you are just farming for personal use or as a hobby, you can prepare a space behind your house for it.

3. The Tilapia System

The good thing is, that Tilapia can grow well in various environments. They can grow in tanks, ponds, cages, etc. It is important to know which environment you want to grow your tilapia. Using chlorine-free water and having constant access to the water is advisable. Avoid treated water and rainwater. The PH level should be between 6 and 8. The tilapia feed should be properly stored as its contamination can be harmful.  

4. Introduce Fingerlings

If you have set up a proper environment for the successful growth of tilapia, then it is ideal to purchase the fingerlings from a trusted source and put them in the water. The fingerlings will grow best in the right water with the right PH, sunlight, and environment. 

5. Grow and Harvest

You can feed the fish with commercial feed or let it feed on aquatic plants. Regularly clean the water, and avoid farming other fishes in the same water. Ensure that it doesn’t serve as prey to other animals. Feed them with the right feed. Harvest them when they are at the desired sizes

6. Sell or Use it as Food

When your tilapia is in its desired size, you can sell it at wholesale are retail. You can use prepare for you and your family as well. 

In a nutshell, tilapia farming can be lucrative if you use the right methods to grow them and sell them to the right customers. You can also be learning tilapia recipes if you intend to eat at home.
